Shakib Al Hasan undergoes scans to assess the extent of injury to his left quad following NZ vs BAN 2023 ODI World Cup clash

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was not present for the final stages of his team's loss to New Zealand in the 2023 ODI World Cup at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.

The ace all-rounder bowled the last of his 10 overs before the 40th over and left the field for scans, leaving the captaincy reins to Najmul Hossain Shanto. Bangladesh ended up enduring their second defeat in a row as the Blackcaps chased down 246 runs in 42.5 overs to climb to the top of the table.

Shakib struggled with cramps in the Chennai heat after the returning Kane Williamson won the toss for New Zealand and opted to bowl first. Shakib apparently picked up the injury while trying to take a single in the first innings. Stand-in skipper Najmul Shanto said during the post-match presentation:

"He is going for his scans. We will know after that."

Shakib Al Hasan came into bat when Bangladesh were under some serious duress. Reduced to 56-4 in the 12th over, he and Mushfiqur Rahim, the only two players in the entire tournament who are playing their fifth campaign, salvaged Bangladesh's innings.

Shakib scored 40 runs off 51 deliveries before being outdone by a sharp Lockie Ferguson bouncer in the 30th over. On the bowling front, he returned with figures of 1-54, claiming Devon Conway's wicket.

Kane Williamson also sustained an injury in his return to the ODI World Cup

After missing New Zealand's initial set of matches at the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup, Kane Williamson returned to the playing XI and led the side while replacing Will Young in the team.

The skipper showed his class in a tricky run chase and scored 78 runs off 107 deliveries before being retired hurt as a precautionary measure. He was hit on his thumb by a stray throw while attempting to complete a single. The medical team attended to him straightaway and put a heavy bandage on the affected area.

Williamson confirmed during the post-match presentation that he will undergo scans on Saturday. As of now, there are no further updates regarding the same, and the extent of the injury will only be determined once the results of the scans are out.
