Shreyas Iyer named captain, no Prithvi Shaw as Mumbai announce squad for first three matches of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25
Mumbai announced their squad for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25, with Shreyas Iyer named the side's captain. The senior selection committee of the Mumbai Cricket Association announced the squad on Tuesday, December 17, for the first three matches of the upcoming 50-over tournament.
The tournament is set to begin on Saturday, December 21, with Mumbai scheduled to play their first game on the same day against Karnataka in Ahmedabad. Notably, Prithvi Shaw, who went unsold in the IPL auction earlier this year, has not been named in the Vijay Hazare squad.
Shreyas Iyer recently led Mumbai in a successful Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 campaign as they defeated Madhya Pradesh in the final to clinch the trophy. Riding on the title-winning campaign, he was named the Mumbai captain for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy as well.
2024 has been a successful year for Shreyas Iyer as a captain. Earlier this year, he led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final. Surprisingly, he was not retained by KKR ahead of the 2025 season.
Mumbai's Shreyas Iyer-led squad for Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25
Underfire cricketer Prithvi Shaw has been left out after an ordinary Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024, where he scored 197 runs in nine games. After missing out on an IPL contract and staying away from the Indian senior team set-up, the exclusion from the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad comes as a further blow for the opening batter.
Ajinkya Rahane, who was the leading run-scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and played a massive role in Mumbai's triumph, is also missing from the squad. While Suryakumar Yadav has been selected, he could be away for national duty.
Mumbai squad for Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 (first three matches): Shreyas Iyer (C), Ayush Mhatre, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Jay Bista, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Siddhesh Lad, Hardik Tamore (wk), Prasad Pawar (wk), Atharva Ankolekar, Tanush Kotian, Shardul Thakur, Royston Dias, Juned Khan, Harsh Tanna, Vinayak Bhoir.
