Shubman Gill surpasses Virat Kohli on list of Indian batters with most centuries in the World Test Championship
Team India batter Shubman Gill notched up his fifth Test century on Day 3 of the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday, September 21. With his hundred, the 25-year-old also went past Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Mayank Agarwal on the list of Indian batters with most tons in the World Test Championship (WTC).
Gill's century on Day 3 of the Chepauk Test was his fifth three-figure score in the World Test Championship in 26 matches. Kohli has four WTC tons in 37 games, while Pant and Agarwal have as many from 25 and 19 Tests, respectively.
Gill is now in second position among Indian batters who have notched up the most hundreds in the World Test Championship. The list is headed by skipper Rohit Sharma, who has nine centuries to his name in the WTC from 33 matches.
Incidentally, both Gill and Pant struck hundreds on Day 3 of the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday. India resumed their second innings on 81-3 and declared on 287-4, having amassed a massive lead of 514 runs. In response, Bangladesh were 158-4 at stumps, needing a further 357 runs for an improbable victory.
Gill, who was unbeaten on 33 at stumps on Day 2, returned to the pavillion unconquered on 119 off 176 balls. On the other hand, Pant, who was batting on 12 overnight, smashed 109 off 128 balls. The duo added 167 runs for the fourth wicket. While Gill struck 10 fours and four sixes in his 243-minute stay at the crease, Pant hammered 13 fours and four maximums in his innings, which lasted 148 minutes.
