“Snail pace” - Former Australia cricketer slams umpires over rain delays in BGT 2024-25 3rd Test
The third Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test at The Gabba has seen constant rain interruptions throughout the four days. These delays have not just left the players and fans frustrated, but have also annoyed the experts. Former Australia cricketer Kerry O'Keeffe has gone to the length of slamming umpires over the rain delays.
He expressed his concerns about the length of some of the delays that have taken away a considerable amount of time from the game, potentially harming Australia's chances of winning the third Test against India.
While the hosts already dropped an early chance (Steve Smith dropping KL Rahul) on Day 4 (Tuesday, December 17) of the ongoing Test, the constant rain interruptions do not seem to be helping their cause.
During the opening session, a five-minute downpour was followed by a 25-minute break. The length of the delay left O'Keeffe frustrated as he criticized the umpires while commentating on Fox Cricket for not being quick enough.
"We've preached pro-activity with umpires for years ... snail pace," O'Keeffe said (via Yahoo News). "Players should be out there warming up, they should be ready to go. It's frustrating for everyone."
Isa Guha calls out umpires during rain delays on Day 4 of the ongoing third BGT Test
Isa Guha joined O'Keeffe in calling out the umpires on Day 4 of the ongoing third Test.
"The rain stopped about 10 minutes ago, and you could see when it started, it would clear up quickly - it was just one cloud," she said while commentating on Fox Cricket (via Yahoo News).
"I just wonder if the umpires in that situation could say to the players, 'just hang around' because we can probably get back going straight away," she added.
Guha pointed out that the umpires did not get back to the pitch to make an inspection soon enough, and took several minutes to make their way out to the middle after the rain had stopped.
