SRH vs PBKS: Who won yesterday's match in IPL 2024?
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by four wickets in yesterday's IPL 2024 match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. SRH confirmed their place in Qualifier 1 after the Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders match was abandoned due to rain.
Batting first after winning the toss, Punjab Kings put up 214-5, which Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down in 19.1 overs. SRH got off to a disastrous start, as Arshdeep Singh knocked over the in-form Travis Head for a golden duck, but the joy for the fielding side was short-lived.
Abhishek Sharma (66 off 28) hit another scintillating half-century, while Rahul Tripathi (33 off 18), Nitish Reddy (37 off 25) and Heinrich Klaasen (42 off 26) made important contributions to guide SRH to a crucial victory.
Sharma and Tripathi didn't let the early loss of Head's wicket affect the team's momentum, adding 72 for the second wicket at a rapid pace.
The scintillating stand ended when Harshal Patel foxed Tripathi with a slower ball to end a 22-run over. Abhishek raced to a 21-ball fifty by slamming the Punjab Kings pacer for consecutive fours in his next over.
His superb knock ended when he sliced a wide slower ball from Shashank Singh to deep cover point.
Following Abhishek's dismissal, Reddy and Klaasen took charge, adding 47 for the fourth wicket. Neither of two set SRH batters could stay till the end. Shahbaz Ahmed (3) also perished cheaply, but by then victory was a mere formality.
Prabhsimran blitz takes PBKS to 214-5
Batting first, PBKS came up with an impressive effort, although it wasn't enough in the end against a strong Hyderabad line-up.
Opener Prabhsimran Singh led the charge for Punjab Kings, hammering 71 off 45. He featured in a brilliant opening stand of 97 in 9.1 overs with Atharva Taide (46 off 27).
Rilee Rossouw, the only overseas player in the Punjab batting line-up following the exit of the other big names, chipped in with 49 off 24. Sunrisers Hyderabad, though, hit back strongly with the big wickets of Shashank (2) and Ashutosh Sharma (2).
Stand-in skipper Jitesh Sharma (32* off 15) played a good hand, but PBKS should have crossed 230 after the blazing start they got. Their failure to accelerate in the end overs came back to haunt them.
SRH vs PBKS: Who won Player of the Match in yesterday's IPL 2024 match?
