"The results are obviously good for us" - Josh Hazlewood on India's loss to New Zealand ahead of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25
Australia's new-ball seamer Josh Hazlewood believes New Zealand's series sweep over India bodes as a positive sign for them ahead of the five-Test series. However, the New South Wales seamer remains wary of India, given their success in Australia the last two times.
The Indian team suffered a shocking series whitewash to New Zealand in three Tests in their backyard. The hosts were undone by seam bowling in the opening game in Bengaluru, followed by spin on the next two occasions to create an unwanted piece of history.
Speaking to The Sydney Morning Herald, Hazlewood reckons a handful of the Indian players will be unsure of what to expect in Australia, given it will be their first time. The veteran elaborated:
"It might awaken a sleeping giant, so to speak. It’s obviously better them losing 3-0 than winning 3-0, easily. The confidence might have taken a bit of a hit. A lot of them have been out here, but there’s a few batters who haven’t, so they’ll be a bit unsure of what to expect.
"I don’t think you can read too much into it. The results are obviously good for us in a way. Credit to the Kiwi boys. They played outstanding cricket."
The three defeats to the Black Caps also ensured that India's path to the World Test Championship (WTC) final will become tricky. They need to win at least four out of five Tests Down Under.
"Every time we play India, it’s right up there with the Ashes" - Josh Hazlewood
The 33-year-old, who played in the Sheffield Shield fixture against Queensland, has backed his body to be where it exactly needs to be, adding:
"I pretty much got out what I needed … very happy with how I bowled. Body felt surprisingly good. The longer I went, I think the better that I felt, and the rhythm was there. It’s just a huge series. Every time we play India, it’s right up there with the Ashes. I think the crowds will be massive."
The first Test between India and Australia begins on November 22 in Perth.
