“They don’t know the rule” – Ravichandran Ashwin after commentators fail to point out why he would’ve survived non-striker’s run out in TNPL 2024
Ravichandran Ashwin roasted the on-air commentators for not pointing out why he would’ve survived the non-striker’s run out in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2024 match on Sunday, July 28. The legendary off-spinner spoke while reacting to an X user asking why the commentator didn’t mention he would’ve been not out during the game between Dindigul Dragons and Nellai Royal Kings.
In the match, Mohit Prasath warned Ashwin of the non-striker’s run out during the 15th over of the Dindigul Dragons’ innings. The right-hander was inside his crease when the ball was supposed to be released.

A user wrote on X:
“Why are the commentators not pointing the fact that he was in at the time of the delivery stride and that it would have been a Not out?”
Sharing the rule, Ravichandran Ashwin replied on the micro-blogging platform:
“Cos they don’t know the rule.”
Ravichandran Ashwin shares non-striker's run out rule
As per the non-striker's run out rules, which were shared by Ravichandran Ashwin, the bowler’s arm must not reach the highest point of his/ her normal bowling action in the delivery swing. Once the bowler has reached the point, it is no longer possible for the bowler to run out the non-striker.
According to Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) Laws of Cricket, Law 38.3 which pertains to the “Non striker leaving his/her ground early,” states:
“At any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be run out if he/ she is out of his/ her ground.”
“In these circumstances, the non-striker will be out run out if he/ she is out of his/ her ground when his/ her wicket is broken by the bowler throwing the ball at the stumps or by the bowler’s hand holding the ball, whether or not the ball is subsequently delivered,” the rule further states.
The non-striker’s run out gained popularity following Jos Buttler’s dismissal by Ashwin in IPL 2019.
