"They are never going to realize their potential" - Tom Moody on how SRH have managed their youngsters
Former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Tom Moody believes that the team's short-sighted approach regarding their youngsters is unlikely to reap dividends for them in the future.
Moody pointed out how tearaway speedster Umran Malik was dropped from the SRH starting XI after a few bad outings. He emphasized that while the pacer can be expensive at times, he has the ability to run through the batting order of the opposition.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Moody explained:
"A 23-year-old Umran Malik, who bowls 150 kmph, is going to be expensive. That's a given. But what he is going to do is that he is going to blow a couple of teams apart. But you've got to be prepared. There are going to be a couple of days that he is going to go for 14 or 15 an over.
"If you're thinking short-sighted with players like Umran Malik, Abdul Samad, or Abhishek Sharma, they are never going to realize their potential in your franchise, they'll realize it somewhere else."
Notably, Malik was the top performer with the ball for the Hyderabad-based franchise in the previous edition, bagging 22 wickets from just 14 games. However, he has struggled to get going in the ongoing season, picking up five wickets from seven games at an economy rate of 10.35.
"I don't really know what is happening with him behind the scenes" - Aiden Markram on Umran Malik's exclusion
SRH suffered an eight-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Ravij Gandhi International Stadium on Thursday, May 18.
At the toss, SRH captain Aiden Markram was asked about Umran Malik's absence from the playing XI. Markram stated that he wasn't aware why the bowler has been dropped.
"I am not too sure, to be honest with you. Obviously, he is a player with the X-factor, and bowls at 150kmph, but I can't, I don't really know what is happening with him behind the scenes. But, certainly, he is a player that has a lot of x-factor."
SRH have already been eliminated from the race to the playoffs. The Sunrisers won just four out of their 13 games and are currently the wooden spoon holders of IPL 2023.
