"They're obviously going to pick me up because of the six-fer" - Adam Zampa on his mindset during maiden IPL season
Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa had made his IPL debut for the Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in 2016 and rose to the occasion straightaway. His figures of 6/19 against the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) were the second-best in the league's history until 2019.
Zampa opened up on the experience in his maiden IPL season and how he got to bowl to the likes of star players Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. His confidence was sky-high after getting the better of the South African superstar.
Speaking on The Final Word Cricket Podcast, here's what Adam Zampa had to say about his maiden IPL season:
"I got my debut, bowled to Virat for the first time, got De Villiers out twice in two balls and then the next game was the six-fer and then you're like they're obviously going to pick me up because of the six-fer. Then you go back and you're like I just got to have a solid year. And then I had a stinker and never got a multi-million dollar payday from the IPL."
Zampa accepted that the six-wicket haul made him believe that he would get a big payday. However, that dream of his never materialized.
Adam Zampa on the range of emotions he felt in his maiden IPL season
Adam Zampa played five games in the IPL 2016 season and wasn't a regular in the side. He recalled that while it was a great experience for him to be a part of the league, it was also a bit frustrating at times having to wait for his opportunity.
The Aussie stated (as per the aforementioned source):
"I had a bit of international experience before that (IPL debut) and I always wanted to be a part of the IPL. I went through all kinds of emotions right from how good it is just to be a part of to I am sick of this just get me home I am not playing."
Adam Zampa has played 14 matches in the IPL and has picked up 21 wickets at an economy rate of 7.74.
