“This is just the start” - Mohammed Shami on four-wicket haul in comeback match against MP in Ranji Trophy 2024-25 

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami made a remarkable return to competitive cricket after nearly a year, picking up four wickets for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match against Madhya Pradesh. His performance came on Day 2 of the Round 5 fixture on Thursday, November 14, at Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore.

The 34-year-old bowled 19 overs, including four maidens, giving away 54 runs and taking four wickets, among them MP captain Shubham Sharma, helping Bengal gain a first-innings lead.

After play on Day 2, the seasoned pacer shared a message with his fans on Instagram, stating that this performance was just the beginning and that he’s stronger and hungry for more success. He posted a video of his bowling from the match, captioning it:

“Finally, the wait is over! After 360 days, I’m back on field, stronger, and hungrier. 4 wickets for Bengal in Ranji Trophy and this is just the start. Every delivery, every wicket is dedicated to You, my incredible fans. Your love fuels my passion. Let’s make this season unforgettable!”

The Bengal pacer has been a key part of India’s pace attack for over a decade since making his debut in 2013. Mohammed Shami has taken 229 wickets in 64 Tests, including six five-wicket hauls, and has also claimed 195 wickets in 101 ODIs.

After a shaky start on Day 1, Shahbaz Ahmed's 92-run knock helped Bengal recover and post a competitive first-innings total of 228. In response, Madhya Pradesh made a strong start, reaching 103 for one at stumps on Day 1.

However, Day 2 belonged to Bengal’s bowlers as MP crumbled from 106/1 to 167 all out. Mohammed Shami took four wickets, while Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal and Mohammed Kaif claimed two each, helping Bengal secure a 61-run first-innings lead. At stumps on Day 2, Bengal were 170/5, holding a lead of 231 runs.
