"This win should be ranked very highly" - RP Singh on India's victory in IND vs BAN 2024 2nd Test

RP Singh reckons India's win in the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur should be rated very highly. He pointed out that virtually no one had predicted the game to yield a result when more than two-and-a-half days were lost due to rain and a wet outfield.

India completed a seven-wicket win against Bangladesh on Tuesday, October 1. They bowled the visitors out for 233 and 146, respectively, in their two innings. Meanwhile, the batting unit smashed 285 for nine in just 34.4 overs in their first essay, and chased down the 95-run target in 17.2 overs.

While reviewing the game on Colors Cineplex, RP Singh noted that India proved virtually all cricket experts wrong by registering a win in the Kanpur Test.

"This win should be ranked very highly because the entire thinking was changed here. If we see the first day's play and the forecast of rain, we had never thought that such a result could come in this Test match. So just to think that they could try to get a result in this Test match," he said.

The former India pacer pointed out that Rohit Sharma made the unconventional decision to bowl first because of the inclement weather.

"Everyone believed that you should bat first after winning the toss here. Kanpur's history has been of batting first and posting big scores. The wicket turns later. That was changed keeping the weather in mind," Singh observed.

RP Singh praised the entire team for rising to the occasion with both bat and ball.

"After that, the way they batted, and the bowling was incredible because it's not easy to bowl on this surface. If we see everything overall, it was a proper team effort, whether they came to bat or bowl," he stated.

Jasprit Bumrah was India's most successful bowler, picking up three wickets in each innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the hosts' star performer with the bat, scoring a half-century in each innings.

In the same discussion, RP Singh noted that the Indian fielders took some brilliant catches as well.

"Another area that looked most special to me was catching. The Indian team took fantastic catches. They converted small, small chances. I would say only one catch was dropped, a very difficult one by KL Rahul. The Indian team created the other catches. India should get full marks here," he said.

The cricketer-turned-commentator pointed out that the win will further boost India's chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship final.

"This win is extremely significant for them because this win will be very crucial for them in the WTC cycle as well. In Kanpur, where everyone had lost hope, they said that they had faith in themselves, their skills, and their captain Rohit Sharma and the support staff. They took the decision and the entire team together proved it correct," RP Singh added.

India have consolidated their top position in the WTC points table with the 2-0 series win against Bangladesh. They will next face New Zealand in a three-match Test series at home before heading to Australia for a five-match Test series.
