Washington Sundar shares a cheeky reaction to picture from Perth Test showing his bowling speed as '140.6 kph'
Team India all-rounder Washington Sundar has reacted to an image from the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Test in Perth, which erroneously shows his bowling speed as 140.6 kph. Sundar, being an off-spinner, cannot logically hit that speed, which practically can only be achieved by a fast bowler or a medium pacer.
Sundar played a good supporting act in the opening Test of the five-match series between India and Australia in Perth, which the visitors won by 295 runs to register their biggest Test win Down Under in terms of runs. He scored 29 in the second innings and claimed 2-48 after Australia were set a target of 534.
On Wednesday, November 27, Sundar took to his Instagram story to share a screenshot from the Perth Test in which his bowling speed was incorrectly registered as '140.6 kph'. The 25-year-old shared the image with the caption 'okay' and included a thinking face emoji.
Washington Sundar was picked ahead of Ashwin and Jadeja for the 1st BGT 2024-25 Test
India made a big decision to leave out stalwarts Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in favor of Sundar for the first Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Perth. The all-rounder did not have a huge role to play in the game as skipper Jasprit Bumrah starred with eight wickets, while Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli struck centuries in India's second innings.
Sundar was preferred over Ashwin and Jadeja after his impressive performance in the Test series against New Zealand at home, which the Kiwis won 3-0. Brought into the playing XI for the second Test in Pune, the off-spinner ended up being the joint-leading wicket-taker in the series, claiming 16 wickets from four innings at an average of 14.12, with one five-fer and two four-fers.
Jadeja also picked up 16 scalps from three Tests, averaging 21.56, with two five-fers. Ashwin had a disappointing series and managed to pick up only nine wickets at an average of 41.22, with a best of 3/63. In contrast, New Zealand's left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel picked up 15 wickets from five innings at an average of 23.80, Mitchell Santner, also a left-arm spinner, claimed 13 wickets in the Pune Test.
