[Watch] "21 saal ka hai woh abhi?" - Piyush Chawla surprised after hearing CSK youngster Sameer Rizvi's age
India's veteran spinner Piyush Chawla was surprised to find out that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Sameer Rizvi is just 21 years old (he will turn 21 in December). He laughed after hearing the youngster's age, probably suggesting that it may not be the real age.
Rizvi is currently captaining Kanpur Superstars in the ongoing second edition of the Uttar Pradesh (UP) T20 league. The swashbuckling batter guided his team to a victory in the rain-hit Qualifier 2 against Lucknow Falcons.
With Kanpur requiring four runs off the last three balls in the Super Over, Rizvi hit a stunning six off Bhuvneshwar Kumar's bowling to take his side into the final.
While the right-handed batter has made a name for himself with his big hitting, Chawla's reaction to his age could raise a few eyebrows. The leg spinner's cheeky reaction came on journalist Shubhankar Mishra's podcast (from 27:16).
He said:
"21 saal ka hai woh abhi?" (He is still only 21?)
Sameer Rizvi will next be seen in action in the final over the UP T20 League 2024. Kanpur Strikers and Meerut Mavericks will battle it out against each other in the summit clash in Lucknow on Saturday, September 14.
It is worth mentioning that Rizvi was signed by CSK for a whopping ₹8.40 crore, making him the most expensive uncapped player at the IPL 2024 auction.
Sameer Rizvi announced himself on the big stage with two sixes to Rashid Khan
CSK's Sameer Rizvi's first ball of his IPL career came against Gujarat Titans' (GT) crafty spinner Rashid Khan. While most young batters would have taken a defensive approach against the star bowler, Rizvi had other plans.
He announced himself with a stunning six over the deep square. The young batter hit yet another six to Rashid, depositing the final ball of the over over the long off fielder.
Sameer Rizvi finished with 51 runs across five innings in IPL 2024. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side failed to qualify for the playoffs, finishing fifth on the points table with seven wins and as many losses.
