"Wasn't something that I was not going to announce even if we had lost" - Virat Kohli on his T20I retirement

While collecting the Player of the Match award at the 2024 T20 World Cup final, Virat Kohli stated that he had decided that the ICC event was going to be his final T20I assignment for the national team.

The seasoned campaigner mentioned that he would have announced his retirement even if India had lost in the final. Suggesting that it was time for the younger players to take over, he said:

"This was my last T20 game playing for India. We wanted to lift that cup. This was an open secret. Wasn't something that I was not going to announce even if we had lost.
"It's time for the next generation to take the T20 game forward and do wonders as we have seen them do in the IPL. I have no doubts that they will keep the flag waving high and take this team further from here now."

South Africa finished at 169/8 after 20 overs in the run chase. Hardik Pandya claimed three wickets while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh took two scalps apiece.
