[Watch] Ben Stokes limps off the field due to injury in MO vs NC The Hundred 2024 game, doubtful for Sri Lanka Tests
England Test captain and Northern Superchargers all-rounder Ben Stokes seems to have suffered a serious injury during The Hundred 2024 game against the Manchester Originals at the Old Trafford in Manchester. The 33-year-old was helped by two support staff members of the Superchargers as he was limping with them towards the dugout.
The incident occurred early in the innings as Ollie Robinson ran a single as the ball ended up on the leg-side even as he tried to play a ramp. Although Stokes made it to the striker's end safely, he went down by holding around his left knee and hamstring and immediately tossed the gloves away.
The Durham all-rounder had sustained a finger injury during the 2021 edition of the tournament and looked quite devastated as he seems to have realized the magnitude of this injury.
The left-hander hasn't made any big contributions in the two innings that he has batted thus far, making 0 against the Birmingham Phoenix and 2 against the Welsh Fire. The seam-bowling all-rounder was at 2 when he retired hurt.
Ben Stokes' chances of playing in Test series against Sri Lanka in limbo
The injury also means that the Christchurch born all-rounder likely remains doubtful for the three-Test series against Sri Lanka, beginning on August 21 at Old Trafford in Manchester. Ollie Pope is likely to step in as captain should the 33-year-old be ruled out of the series. England already have injury concerns ahead of the Sri Lanka series as Zak Crawley and Dillon Pennington were ruled out due to right finger and hamstring injuries, respectively.
The injury to England's regular captain could also mean that uncapped batter Jordan Cox could be selected in the XI. The Englishmen are coming off a 3-0 win over the West Indies, regaining the Richards-Botham Trophy and are seeking a perfect end to their red-ball season.
