[Watch] Chamari Athapaththu hits a six to reach first-ever century of Women’s T20 Asia Cup

Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu slammed the first-ever century of the Women’s T20 Asia Cup against Malaysia Women at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla on Monday, July 22. The left-handed batter scored an unbeaten 119 runs off 69 balls at a stunning strike rate of 172.46 with the help of seven sixes and 14 boundaries.

During her knock, Athapaththu slammed most sixes in an innings in the T20 tournament. The 34-year-old also shared a 105-run partnership with Anushka Sanjeewani for the third wicket.

Athapaththu has the highest individual score in the Women’s T20 Asia Cup. She went past Mithali Raj, who scored an unbeaten 97 against Malaysia in 2018. With the third hundred, Chamari also has the most tons in women’s T20Is.

Athapaththu achieved the landmark in the 19th over of Sri Lanka’s innings. She hit a six off Alsya Eleesa’s length ball to reach her hundred.

Sharing the video on X (formerly Twitter), the Asian Cricket Council wrote:

Chamari Athapaththu’s century helps Sri Lanka post 184 against Malaysia in Women’s T20 Asia Cup game

A clinical batting display from skipper Chamari Athapaththu helped Sri Lanka post 184/4 against Malaysia on Monday. Apart from Chamari, Anushka Sanjeewani and Harshitha Madavi chipped in with scores of 31 (24) and 26 (23), respectively.

Winifred Duraisingham starred with the ball for Malaysia, returning with figures of 2/34, while Suabika Manivannan and Mahirah Izzati Ismail scalped one wicket apiece.

In response, Malaysia Women were 32/5 in 11 overs, with Aina Najwa and Dhanusri Muhunan at the crease. They will play against Thailand Women in their next group-stage game.

Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by seven wickets in their opening game of the tournament.
