[Watch] David Warner dismissed for just 3 runs after sluggish outing in AUS vs AFG T20 World Cup Super 8 matchÂ
Australian veteran batter David Warner could not make an impression in the run chase against Afghanistan in the crucial 2024 T20 World Cup Super 8 clash on Saturday, June 22. The left-handed batter was dismissed for just three runs off eight deliveries at the Arnos Vale Ground in St. Vincent.
The Men in Yellow were handed a 149-run target after they had opted to bowl first. Their run chase began on a poor note as both Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh departed within the first three overs to Naveen-ul-Haq. Warner had the responsibility of steering the run chase, but failed in his task as he lost his wicket in the final over of the powerplay.
Warner attempted a slog sweep against off-spinner Mohammad Nabi. Being down on one knee, he hoped to get the ball over the infield at least. But, he could only make contact with the ball with the bat's outside edge due to the extra bounce. The ball headed towards short fine, where Noor Ahmad took a comfortable catch. Have a look at the dismissal right here.
The wicket left Australia in a spot of bother at 32/3 in the sixth over, with the entire top order back in the hut. The Aussies need a win to cement their place in the semi-finals, with a showdown against India left to be played in the coming days.
Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell in charge of repair work in the run chase following Warner's dismissal
Australia had to settle with just one run in the final over of the powerplay as Warner departed off the first ball itself. However, the middle order duo of Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis triggered a momentum shift by taking on the bowlers in the middle overs.
The pair have dealt with the spinners with relative ease so far, and boundaries have been coming on a regular basis to ease some of the pressure that Australia were under.
As of writing, the Men in Yellow are placed at 61-3 after nine overs while Afghanistan have burned through one of their reviews.
