[Watch] Deepti Sharma bowls Chamari Athapaththu out behind her legs for the biggest wicket of Women's Asia Cup 2024 final
Deepti Sharma, the highest wicket-taker of the 2024 Women's Asia Cup, took out Chamari Athapaththu, the highest run-scorer of the tournament, in the final in Dambulla on Sunday.
In the context of the game, it was the biggest moment as the Sri Lanka skipper was batting at 61 in a chase of 166 and single-handedly taking the game away from India. However, the dismissal didn't matter eventually as the Sri Lankan middle-order stepped up to complete the chase chase it and create history in front of a packed crowd in Dambulla.
The wicket came in the 12th over of the innings. Deepti was brought on to break the massive second-wicket partnership between Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama but she started poorly, conceding two early boundaries.
Deepti fired the last ball on the leg stump, almost getting a yorker at the base of the timber. Chamari looked to hoick it away but the the ball sneaked under her bat quickly to crash in and take off the bails. Watch it here:
Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur's reaction said it all there too. Athapaththu was the highest run-scorer of the tournament and Sri Lanka's best batter. She had started extremely well and was pushing India's left-arm spinners to the sword.
Although earlier in the game, she ran her opening partner Vishmi Gunaratne out, it didn't affect her mental fortitude and she kept picking her moments and deliveries to score nine boundaries and two sixes.
Sri Lanka overcome Chamari Atapattu's wicket to create history
It looked like Sri Lanka would crumble after Athapaththu's wicket but they didn't.
Youngster Harshitha Samarawickrama and Kavisha Dilhari put up a brilliant 73-run stand, feeding on the momentum being given to them by the crowd's backing. They also got help from Harman dropping Harshitha's catch two overs later off Deepti's bowling.
The hosts won the game in the 19th over to prevent India from defending the title.
