[Watch] Devdutt Padikkal departs for a 23-ball duck in 1st BGT 2024-25 Test in Perth

Team India batter Devdutt Padikkal was dismissed for a 23-ball duck in the first innings of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. The left-handed batter, coming in at No. 3, struggled against the pace attack and the bounce at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Friday, November 22.

Padikkal came into the crease as early as the third over of the innings after Yashasvi Jaiswal departed for a duck. The No. 3 batter was a late inclusion into the main squad due to Shubman Gill's injury during match simulation ahead of the first Test.

After a couple of solid knocks for India A in the unofficial Test series against Australia A, Padikkal looked all at sea. The southpaw struggled to make contact with the ball almost on all occasions before he inevitably nicked one to the wicketkeeper off Hazlewood's bowling.

He had tried to defend the length delivery, but the late seam movement led to the ball moving away from him, getting the outside edge on the way.

Have a look at the dismissal right here:

This marked Padikkal's second Test appearance after debuting in the fifth Test against England in Dharamshala earlier this year. He had scored a fifty and continued to prosper in red-ball cricket, leading to his call-up, pipping the likes of Sai Sudharsan and Ruturaj Gaikwad in the process.

Team India reeling in the first session after losing Jaiswal and Padikkal

The Men in Blue's campaign Down Under has got off to a wobbly start. The pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins have been on the money, hardly offering any room for the batters to exploit.

KL Rahul has held one end well, by judging deliveries well and executing his leaves to perfection. Virat Kohli joins the opening batter at the other end as India look to negotiate the testing period upfront.

As of writing, India are placed at 28-2 midway through the first session on the opening day of the contest.
