Sri Lanka will be looking to whitewash the Kiwis 2-0
Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka skipper Dhananjaya de Silva won the toss and opted to bat first. The hosts were off to a disastrous start, losing opener Pathum Nissanka in the very first over of the game which was bowled by the New Zealand captain Tim Southee.
From thereon, Sri Lanka never looked back as they ended Day 1 of the second Test match in a commanding position, registering 306 runs in 90 overs for the loss of just three wickets. While Chandimal amassed a century, Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis are currently at the crease, batting on 78* and 51* runs, respectively. Opener Dimuth Karunaratne also contributed 46 valuable runs at the top of the order before being run out.
Meanwhile, Dhananjaya de Silva's men will be looking to whitewash the inaugural World Test Championship winners, having already won the opening fixture of the two-match Test series in Galle on Monday, September 23.
Chasing 275 runs for the victory, the visitors were bundled out for 211 runs, thereby falling short of the target by 63 runs. Left-arm orthodox bowler Prabath Jayasuriya was adjudged the Player of the Match for picking up nine wickets in the encounter (four wickets in the first innings and a five-wicket haul in the second innings).
