[Watch] Dream debut as Yuzvendra Chahal takes a fifer for Northamptonshire vs Kent in One Day Cup

Yuzvendra Chahal starred with the ball on his debut for Northamptonshire against Kent in the One Day Cup in Canterbury on Wednesday, August 14. The leg spinner returned with exceptional figures of 5/14 in his 10 overs, which included five maidens.

Chahal spun a web for the middle and lower-order batters as Kent were bundled out for 82 in 35.1 overs. He dismissed Jaydn Denly, Ekansh Singh, Grant Stewart, Beyers Swanepoel and Nathan Gilchrist to suffer a collapse. Kent lost their last six wickets for just 33 runs.

One Day Cup’s official handle took to X to share Chahal’s dream debut with the ball. They captioned the social media post:

“Yuzvendra Chahal: 10-5-14-5. A magnificent Northamptonshire debut from the Indian leg-spinner. In his last eight overs his figures were 8-5-4-5! Watch every ball of his unplayable debut spell here.”

“His record speaks for itself” – Northamptonshire head coach John Sadler on Yuzvendra Chahal

Northamptonshire head coach John Sadler has lauded Yuzvendra Chahal for joining the Steelbacks for the final One Day Cup fixture and five County Championship games.

He told Northamptonshire’s official website:

“Yuzvendra is another high-profile overseas player who brings with him a wealth of experience and some incredible skills. His record speaks for itself and his wicket-taking ability will add strength to our attack.”

Earlier in the day, Northamptonshire welcomed Chahal by sharing his incredible numbers in Indian Premier League. They said in a statement:

“The 34-year-old became the first player in IPL history to take over 200 wickets and he brings tons of experience to the County and is excited to get together with his new teammates at the back of the 2024 season.”

Yuzvendra Chahal was part of the 2024 T20 World Cup-winning team. The 34-year-old, however, failed to find a place in India’s T20I squads for away series against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. The spinner remains India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is with 96 scalps. Overall, he has 354 scalps in 305 T20s.
