[Watch] Extra bounce does the trick as Josh Hazlewood dismisses Virat Kohli for just 5 runs in 1st IND vs AUS BGT 2024-25 Test

Some extra bounce did the trick as Josh Hazlewood dismissed Virat Kohli caught behind on Day 1 of the first Test between India and Australia in Perth on Friday, November 22. Kohli walked back for just 5 off 12 deliveries, leaving the tourists in a spot of bother at 32/3.

The dismissal came in the 17th over of India’s first innings. Hazlewood bowled short-of-a-length ball outside off that climbed on Kohli. Surprised by the extra bounce on offer, the right-handed batter failed to keep down and took an edge that carried to Usman Khawaja in the slip cordon.

With the dismissal, Virat Kohli continued his lean patch with the bat. The 35-year-old managed 192 runs in his last five Tests, including a solitary half-century. On the other hand, Hazlewood took his second wicket of the match, having dismissed Devdutt Padikkal for a duck.

“He's made two test match hundreds, I think in his last 60 test match innings” – Ricky Ponting on Virat Kohli’s dipping numbers in Test cricket

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting recently pointed out Virat Kohli’s below-par numbers in Test cricket over the last two years.

The cricketer-turned-commentator told 7 Cricket (via Sports Tak):

“I was just asked the question if I was concerned with Virat's output over the last couple of years. And it was, it was funny, the timing of it, because it was only the day before that I was read some stats on what Virat sort of hasn't been able to do in the last couple of years. He's made two test match hundreds, I think in his last 60 test match innings.”
"So I mean, anybody, Virat himself would be concerned with his output because he's a better player than that has been for such a long period of time,” he added.

Kohli, however, had scored 1352 runs in 13 Tests, including six tons ahead of the ongoing game Down Under.

As far as the match is concerned, the visitors were 40/3, with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant at the crease.
