[Watch] Gareth Delany takes a nonchalant one-handed catch off his own bowling in IRE vs CAN T20 World Cup 2024 match

Ireland leg-spinner Gareth Delany struck with the first ball of his spell in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 clash against Canada at the Nassau International County Stadium in New York. The 27-year-old took a nonchalant one-handed catch to get rid of Dilpreet Bajwa for 7 off 9 deliveries.

The dismissal occurred in the 9th over of the innings as Paul Stirling introduced spin. Bajwa looked to work a slightly shorter delivery on the onside but only managed to get a leading edge as Delany plucked the ball with his one hand. The right-handed batter had slammed a gorgeous boundary off Barry McCarthy in the previous over and seemed to be in good touch.

Before Delany got the better of Bajwa, Craig Young dismissed Aaron Johnson and Pargat Singh, while Mark Adair removed Navneet Dhaliwal. Stirling had won the toss and opted to field first.

The Dublin-born cricketer notably did not roll his arms during Ireland's opening match against India in New York. The Irishmen suffered a heavy defeat to Rohit Sharma and Co., going down by 8 wickets as they managed only 96 runs on the board. However, the 27-year-old top-scored for their side with 26 off 14 deliveries, carrying them closer to 100 when Ireland slumped to 50-8 at one stage.

However, the total was nowhere close to being enough as Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant played notable innings. The Indian captain struck a 37-ball 52 before leaving the field due to an elbow injury. It was Rishabh Pant, who stayed until the end and played an outrageous reverse ramp to seal the win.

After the match against Canada, Ireland will face the USA and Pakistan on June 14th and 16th, respectively.
