[Watch] Glenn Phillips survives as Nicholas Pooran misses easiest of run-outs in WI vs NZ T20 World Cup 2024 match
West Indies' gloveman Nicholas Pooran missed an easy run-out of Glenn Phillips in the T20 World Cup 2024 match against New Zealand on Wednesday (June 12) at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. Pooran's missed attempt at a direct hit from close quarters was a huge let-off at the time.
The incident occurred in the 12th over of the innings sent down by Roston Chase. Phillips nudged one to the on-side and went halfway down the wicket, but his partner James Neesham did not respond. Pooran had all the time in the world to hit the stumps and took aim, but missed as the Kiwis ended up getting the single.
The West Indies were sent into bat after New Zealand won the toss, but the co-hosts slumped to 58-6 at one stage, followed by 112-9 in the 18th over. However, they still managed to reach 149 in 20 overs thanks to Sherfane Rutherford's unbeaten 68(39).
West Indies storm into Super 8 stage as New Zealand suffer 2nd consecutive defeat despite Glenn Phillips' resistance
With New Zealand already losing to Afghanistan by a heavy margin, the fixture against the co-hosts became a must-win game for them. However, the batting line-up failed to click once again, headlined by Kane Williamson's second single-figure score.
The only sizeable partnership was between Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips as they stitched together 23 off 15 deliveries. Phillips threatened to pull off the chase before perishing for 40 off 33 deliveries with three fours and two sixes.
Alzarri Joseph finished as the pick of the bowlers for the Windies with figures of 4-0-19-4, while Gudakesh Motie snared 4-0-25-3. Akeal Hosein and Andre Russell picked up a wicket each. With two defeats, the Black Caps are almost knocked out of the competition, leaving Afghanistan as the only other team from the group with a chance to join the West Indies in the Super 8s.
