[Watch] “Incredible” - Middlesex captain Mark Stoneman shows spirit of cricket, puts stumps back in the ground after getting out in One Day Cup match

In a rare sight, Middlesex captain Mark Stoneman showed spirit of cricket while playing against Somerset in the One Day Cup at Lord’s in London on August 11. The left-hander put the stumps back in the ground after getting bowled out by Riley Meredith.

The incident took place during the eighth over of Middlesex’s innings. Riley Meredith bowled an inswinging delivery that went through the bat and pad gap to crash onto the stump. The off-stump went for a walk before Stoneman put the stick back before walking off the ground. Usually, the on-field umpires put the stumps back into the ground once it gets uprooted.

“Incredible from Mark Stoneman. He's clean bowled by Riley Meredith - but before he walks off, he pops his off-stump back in the ground for the umpires.”

Somerset dominate Middlesex in One Day Cup match

A clinical bowling display from Riley Meredith helped Somerset dominate Middlesex on Sunday.

At the time of writing, Middlesex were 105/8 after 30.4 overs, with Luke Hollman and Henry Brookes at the crease. Meredith has taken four wickets in his eight overs for Somerset so far. Skipper Mark Stoneman (23 off 19) and Martin Anderson (34 off 49) got starts but failed to convert them into big scores.

The two teams are coming on the back of wins in their previous encounters. Middlesex beat Lancashire by five wickets, while Somerset defeated Worcestershire by the same margin.

Somerset are placed at the top of the points table in One Day Cup 2024. They have won five out of seven games. On the other hand, Middlesex have three wins in six games, including an abandoned game due to rain. They have the same number of points as Durham but a lower net run rate (NRR).

Middlesex will next play against Hampshire in their last league game at Northwood on Wednesday, August 14. Meanwhile, Somerset are playing their last league game ahead of the quarterfinals.
