[Watch] Joe Root trapped LBW for 18 runs in crucial run chase during 2nd PAK vs ENG 2024 TestÂ
England batter Joe Root perished for just 18 runs in the side's fourth innings run chase during the second Test against Pakistan. Pakistan got the match-changing dismissal through left-arm spinner Noman Ali in the early stages of Day 4 at the Multan Cricket Stadium on Friday, October 18.
Resuming the innings from their overnight score of 36-2, England were 261 runs away from their target to clinch an unassailable 2-0 lead. The visitors were hit with an early jolt as Sajid Khan dismissed Ollie Pope off the second delivery of the day.
The onus was on the in-form pair of Joe Root and Harry Brook to get England over the line on a crumbling pitch. The former used his command over sweep shots to counter the spin onslaught from both ends. During the 16th over of the innings by Noman Ali, Root shuffled across to attempt yet another sweep shot.
However, in this instance, he failed to make contact with the bat, and the ball went on to strike his back pad. The umpire ruled in favor of the bowler while Root opted to take a review. DRS projected the impact as being umpire's call, leading to the on-field call to stay.

England needed Root to stay at the crease in their bid to achieve their highest successful run chase in the subcontinent.
This marked the second instance where Noman Ali has taken Joe Root's wicket. The left-arm spinner had dismissed the former skipper for a golden duck during England's previous tour of Pakistan in 2022.
England reduced to 55-4 after Joe Root's dismissal
The used surface has proven to be a gamechanger for Pakistan, and the fact that they got to bowl last has also played a huge role in the proceedings. The Men in Green are firm favorites to win from this position and end their losing streak.
Noman Ali struck once again to dismiss Harry Brook, leaving England even deeper in trouble at 78-5 in the fourth innings.
