[Watch] Kamindu Mendis finishes off in style as Kandy Falcons register highest successful run-chase in LPL history
Left-handed batter Kamindu Mendis smashed a six over square leg as the Kandy Falcons registered the highest successful run chase in the history of the Lanka Premier League (LPL). Jaffna Kings and Kandy Falcons squared off in match number 11 of the tournament.
It was the second ball of the penultimate over of the Kandy Falcons’ innings when Kamindu Mendis hit one out of the park to help his team get over the line while chasing a target of 225 runs. With this, the Kandy Falcons also ended their losing streak of three matches.
Here’s the video of the winning shot:
The Kandy Falcons lost explosive West Indian batter Andre Fletcher (13) early while chasing a big target. However, the experienced campaigner, Dinesh Chandimal, was at his very best. The right-handed batter scored 89 runs off just 37 balls, hitting eight fours and seven sixes in his innings.
Later, it was Kamindu Mendis who remained unbeaten on 65 off 36 balls and took his team over the line. The left-handed batter struck five fours and four sixes in his innings. Meanwhile, all-rounder Angelo Mathews played a decent knock of 29* off 13 balls as the Kandy Falcons secured a historic win in the Lanka Premier League.
A brilliant century from Pathum Nissanka helped Jaffna Kings post such a big total
After being asked to bat first, Jaffna Kings openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis (26) stitched a 112-run opening stand. The Proteas batter, Rilee Rossouw, played a brilliant hand of 41 runs off 18 deliveries. However, Nissanka was the standout player for the Jaffna Kings.
The right-handed batter scored 119 runs off just 59 balls, laced with 16 fours and four sixes as the Jaffna Kings finished on 224/7 after 20 overs. However, this target wasn’t enough, as Kandy Falcons batters were on fire and recorded a historic chase.
Jaffna Kings and Kandy Falcons will again face off in the Lanka Premier League on Saturday (July 13) at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
