[Watch] Kamindu Mendis takes absolute screamer of a catch to dismiss Shubman Gill in IND vs SL 2nd ODI

Kamindu Mendis took a stunning reflex catch to dismiss Shubman Gill in the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka at R Premdasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, August 4. With this, Gill departed for 35 runs off 44 balls, failing to convert yet another chance of a big score in back-to-back innings against the islanders.

The stunning catch came during the 18th over of Team India’s run chase. Jeffrey Vandersay bowled a flighted leg-break that pitched outside off-stump, inviting Gill to go for a drive. The right-hander only managed a thick outside edge that flew to the right of Kamindu at first slip. He showed sharp reflexes to grab it.

Shubman Gill’s wicket triggers India's middle-order collapse in IND vs SL game

Shubman Gill’s wicket triggered a collapse as India lost five wickets in a short span in the second ODI. Jaffrey Vandersay has so far taken all six of India's wickets, including the dismissals of Virat Kohli, Shivam Dube Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul. Dube and Rahul departed for ducks, while Kohli and Iyer walked back for 14 (19) and 7 (9), respectively.

At the time of writing, the Men in Blue were 162-6 after 28.4 overs, with Axar Patel and Washington Sundar at the crease.

Batting first, Sri Lanka put up 240/9 in 50 overs. The hosts got off to a poor start as Pathum Nissanka departed first ball but Avishka Fernando (40 off 62) and Kusal Mendis (30 off 42) shared a 74-run partnership for the second wicket. The middle order failed to deliver but Dunith Wellalage (39 off 35) and Kamindu Mendis (40 off 44) helped the islanders post a fighting total.

Washington Sundar starred with the ball for the visitors, returning with figures of 3/30, while Kuldeep Yadav bagged two wickets. Mohammed Siraj and Axar Patel took one apiece.

The winner of this game will take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The opening game was tied after the two teams managed 230 runs each.
