[Watch] Kane Williamson in frustration after unfortunate played on dismissal in NZ vs ENG 2024 3rd Test
Veteran New Zealand batter Kane Williamson was disappointed by the way he was dismissed on Day 1 (Saturday, December 14) of the third Test against England at the Seddon Park in Hamilton, as it ended a promising knock of 44. The former New Zealand captain threw his head back in frustration after preventing the ball from hitting the stumps.
The dismissal occurred in the 59th over of the innings, sent down by right-arm seamer Matthew Potts. With the 34-year-old trying to negotiate an innocuous length delivery from Potts, the ball dribbled behind him after bouncing once. However, Williamson was not quick enough to kick the ball away from the stumps and as a result, threw his head back in frustration for falling for 44.
It was also the second wicket of the innings for Potts, who had earlier dismissed New Zealand skipper Tom Latham for 63. After choosing to field first, openers Latham and Will Young stitched a 105-run partnership. However, the visitors hit back by dismissing their middle-order batters fairly quickly. The Kiwis slipped from 105-0 to 231-7 at one stage.
Kane Williamson became the first New Zealand cricketer to score 9000 Test runs earlier in the series
Meanwhile, the veteran right-hander became the first Black Caps batter to score 9000 Test runs during the opening Test in Christchurch during his innings of 61. However, it has been a series to forget for the home side as England have already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead after the opening two matches in Christchurch and Wellington.
The Kiwis came into the series confident and had a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in sight, especially after stunning Team India 3-0 in their backyard. However, losses in the first two Tests have put the inaugural champions out of contention. Nevertheless, the hosts would like to avoid a series whitewash.
