[Watch] Lahiru Kumara removes Aiden Markram to claim 100th Test wicket during SA vs SL 2nd Test 2024

Sri Lankan pacer Lahiru Kumara claimed his 100th Test wicket on Day 1 of the ongoing second Test against South Africa by dismissing Aiden Markram with a brilliant delivery on Thursday, December 5. The match is being played at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.

The dismissal occurred on the second ball of the 12th over of South Africa’s innings. Lahiru delivered a full ball that veered back into the right-hander. Markram attempted a drive but was undone by the slight movement, with the ball sliding between his bat and pad to dismantle the middle-stump.

This wicket marked Lahiru Kumara's 100th Test scalp, making him the fifth pacer from Sri Lanka to reach this significant milestone.

Here’s a video of the dismissal:

Markram failed to capitalize on his start, departing for 20 off 35 balls, including four boundaries. His dismissal left the hosts at 32 for two after 11.2 overs.

The hosts won the toss and chose to bat first but faced a shaky start, losing Tony de Zorzi for a golden duck in the second over to Asitha Fernando. Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton then added 32 runs for the second wicket before the former was dismissed for 20 by Lahiru Kumara.

Tristan Stubbs came in at No. 4 but had a disappointing outing, getting out for four off 18 balls, becoming Lahiru's second wicket. Since then, Rickelton (29*) and captain Temba Bavuma (27*) have formed an unbroken 38-run partnership for the fourth wicket. At lunch on Day 1, the hosts were 82 for three after 27 overs.

Meanwhile, the hosts enter this match following a win in the first game. In their first innings, Sri Lanka were dismissed for their lowest-ever Test total of 42 runs. Later, while chasing a target of 516, they were bowled out for 282, losing the match by 233 runs.
