[Watch] Lancashire all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer's double strike seals the game against Worcestershire in the England Domestic One-Day Cup 2024
Lancashire all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer picked up two wickets in the last two deliveries against Worcestershire on Wednesday, August 14. The twin dismissals in the penultimate over helped his team register a thrilling three-run victory in a Group A fixture of the England Domestic One-Day Cup 2024.
Iyer, who also contributed 25 runs off 42 balls with the bat earlier in the game, finished with figures of 2-38 in six overs at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.
Here's the video of Venkatesh Iyer's double strike which sealed the game for Lancashire:
It was the eighth and final group-stage game for both sides. Worcestershire skipper Jake Libby won the toss and opted to bowl first.
Lancashire lost their opener Keshana Fonseka in the first over with a solitary run on the board. Although they were reeling at 50-3 at one stage, a captain's knock from Josh Bohannon and George Balderson's half-century helped them post a decent total. Bohannon emerged as their highest run-getter having amassed 87 runs off 123 balls. Eventually, they got bowled out for 237 runs in their 50 overs.
Lancashire's disappointing campaign comes to an end
Chasing 238 for their fifth victory of the campaign in the nine-team Group A, Worcestershire kept losing wickets at regular intervals and lost half their side for 106 runs.
Although the 89-run sixth-wicket partnership between Jake Libby and Tom Taylor gave them the much-needed hope, Worcestershire lost the contest by just three runs, with Venkatesh Iyer dismissing Tom Hinley and Harry Darley in quick succession to finish the proceedings.
Despite the win, Lancashire ended their England Domestic One-Day Cup 2024 campaign in the last spot with just four points. Meanwhile, Worcestershire finished second in the table with 10 points.
Worcestershire will next face Warwickshire in the first quarterfinal at the Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Friday, August 16.
