[Watch] Matthew Potts cleans up Steve Smith with a ripping delivery in ENG vs AUS 2nd ODI
England seamer Matthew Potts cleaned up Steve Smith to give their side a significant breakthrough in the second one-day international against Australia at Headingley in Leeds on Saturday (September 21). The right-arm seamer uprooted the 35-year-old's off-stump and celebrated vividly, dismissing the Aussie for just four runs.
The dismissal occurred in the 14th over of the innings as Potts sent down an inswinger, which produced plenty of seam movement. Smith went for the booming drive, but missed the ball altogether, leading it to hitting the off pole and dislodging it out of the ground.
The former Aussie captain had struck only one boundary and had to depart for four runs.
It was England captain Harry Brook, who won the toss again and affected one change, bringing in Olly Stone for Jofra Archer. Australia triggered three changes, drafting Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood for Cameron Green, Ben Dwarshuis, and Sean Abbott.
Steve Smith scored a brisk 32 in the first ODI vs England
The right-hander, meanwhile, looked extremely good for his 28-ball 32 in the opening game of the series against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Thursday. The New South Wales batter smacked three sixes before Liam Livingstone got the better of him.
Travis Head (154*) and Marnus Labuschagne (77) guided the reigning world champions Australia to a commanding seven-wicket win while chasing down 317. Head also secured the Player of The Match award for his swashbuckling innings.
However, the southpaw perished for 29 off 26 deliveries at Headingley, while his opening partner Matt Short also scored the same number of runs.
England and Australia also locked horns in the three-game T20I series before this. The two sides won a game each, with the series getting drawn due to the third T20I in Manchester resulting in a washout, thanks to persistent rain.
England and Australia will play three more ODIs after the ongoing match, the venues of which are Chester-Le-Street, Lord's, and Bristol.
