[Watch] Michael Vaughan chooses between Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Rohit Sharma in a 'Play, Sell or Bench' IPL game
Former England captain Michael Vaughan was faced with the arduous task of choosing one of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma in a hypothetical IPL game. With the assumption that all three legendary cricketers are in the same IPL team, Vaughan had to pick one to play in the XI, another on the bench as the replacement, and the third one to sell to another franchise.
Yet, without much hesitation, Vaughan picked Dhoni as the player, while going for Kohli as the one to sell and Rohit as the bench player.
Here is a video of the same in a podcast with Cricket.com:
Vaughan said while making the choices:
"I'm playing MS Dhoni. I don't think anyone's been better. No (Virat doesn't find a place). MS is the captain. He's playing. What was the other thing? selling? I'm getting rid of Virat. I'm getting rid of him because he's never won the IPL. Rohit is a six-time winner. MS how many? Five! So I'm playing MS, I'm selling Virat. What was the other one? Yeah, so Rohit is my MS substitute."
"I can get a good load of cash for him (Kohli). He'll go somewhere else for a huge amount of money. That's good business," he added.
Kohli has been part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise from the inaugural IPL edition in 2008 till now.
A look at the trio's overall IPL record
All three of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and MS Dhoni have been part of the IPL since its inception in 2008. While Kohli is the all-time leading run-scorer in the tournament with 8,004 runs in 252 games, Rohit is third with 6,628 runs in 257 outings. Meanwhile, Dhoni is sixth all-time with 5,243 runs in 264 matches.
Rohit has won six IPL titles - five as captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI) and one with the now-defunct Deccan Chargers. Dhoni has also won five IPL titles, with all as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain.
However, Kohli is still searching for his elusive IPL title despite reaching the final thrice in 2009, 2011, and 2016.
The trio is also the top three in most IPL games captained with Dhoni at 226, Rohit at 158, and Kohli at 143.
Yet, all three legends are currently not captaining their respective franchises with Faf du Plessis, Hardik Pandya, and Ruturaj Gaikwad at the helm for RCB, MI, and CSK.
