[Watch] Mix-up between Sri Lanka openers sees Vishmi Gunaratne get run out by miles during Women’s Asia Cup final

A mix-up between Sri Lanka openers Vishmi Gunaratne and Chamari Athapaththu led to the dismissal of the former during the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup final against India on Sunday, July 28. The match is being played at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.

Batting first, the Women in Blue finished 165/5 in their allotted 20 overs. In response, the Sri Lankan side didn’t get an ideal start as they lost Vishmi Gunaratne in the second over. The dismissal took place on the fourth ball of the second over bowled by Pooja Vastrakar.

Gunaratne played the ball towards the mid-wicket area and took off. Chamari Athapaththu initially responded but then stood still. Both the batters were left on the same side as India got an easy first wicket. Gunaratne scored one run off three balls and, her dismissal left Sri Lanka at 7/1 after 1.4 overs.

Sri Lanka have recovered well after an early setback. At the time of writing, they were 99/2 after 13 overs, needing 67 runs in 42 balls. Harshitha Samarawickrama and Kavisha Dilhari were are at the crease for the hosts.


Smriti Mandhana shines for India in Women’s Asia Cup final

India won the toss and decided to bat first. Openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma (16) stitched together a 44-run partnership. India lost its way in the middle overs as Uma Chetry (9) and Harmanpreet Kaur (11) fell cheaply.

Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues put on a decent partnership to bring the innings on track. Rodrigues played a quick-fire inning of 29 off 16 balls. Mandhana played a brilliant hand of 60 runs off 47 balls, smashing 10 boundaries.

Later, Richa Ghosh scored 30 runs off 14 balls, hitting four boundaries and one six, as India finished 165/6 in their 20 overs.
