[Watch] New Zealand's Glenn Phillips cleans up Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva with absolute peach in SL vs NZ 1st Test

New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips bowled an absolute ripper to clean up Sri Lanka skipper Dhanajaya de Silva on Day 1 of the opening Test at Galle International Stadium on Wednesday, September 18. As a result, Silva departed for just 11 runs off 24 balls, leaving his team in a spot of bother at 106-4.

The dismissal came in the 35th over of Sri Lanka’s first innings. Phillips bowled an off-spinner that beat the batter’s inside edge to crash onto the stumps. This was Phillips' first over of the match.

“Glenn Phillips, you beauty! The spinner makes an instant impact with the ball and sneaks one through the bat and pad of de Silva.”

Glenn Phillips has been tremendous with the ball in his short Test career span so far. The 27-year-old has bagged 17 wickets in seven Tests. The off-spinner has bagged 57 wickets in his first-class career.

Notably, Phillips filled Neil Wagner’s void with a five-wicket haul against Australia earlier this year. He also has a fifer against Bangladesh.

Kamindu Mendis helps Sri Lanka recover after early blows against New Zealand

A clinical batting display from Kamindu Mendis has helped Sri Lanka recover after New Zealand produced early dismissals in the first Test.

At the time of writing, Sri Lanka were 202/5, with Mendis (72 off 109) and Kusal Mendis (13 off 25) at the crease. William O'Rourke has been the pick of the bowlers, returning with three wickets. Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal and Pathum Nissanka have chipped in with 36 (116), 30 (71), and 27 (25), respectively.

New Zealand are playing their first Test after their one-off Test against Afghanistan was abandoned with a ball getting bowled. They will also play three Tests against India following the two-match Test series in Sri Lanka.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka recently registered a consolation victory against England in the third Test after losing the series.
