[Watch] Rishabh Pant misses stumping chance to dismiss Shakib Al Hasan on Day 4 of IND vs BAN 1st Test 2024

India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant squandered an easy stumping chance to dismiss seasoned Bangladesh batter Shakib Al Hasan on Day 4 of the first Test in the two-match series. This crucial moment unfolded on the fifth ball of the 47th over on Sunday, September 22, at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Shakib came down the pitch and missed Ravindra Jadeja's non-turning full delivery. Pant couldn’t collect the ball cleanly and it deflected off his glove onto his chest, granting Shakib a reprieve. At that moment, the left-handed batter was on 17 and struck a boundary on the following delivery.

However, Shakib could not add much to his score and was eventually dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin. He managed 25 runs off 56 balls, including three boundaries. His dismissal left Bangladesh in a tough spot at 194/5 after 51.4 overs. The visitors are chasing 515 for the win.

At the time of writing, Bangladesh were at 217/6 after 57 overs, needing another 298 runs to win with three wickets in hand.

“There’s simply no one else like him” - Wasim Jaffer praises Rishabh Pant for his heroics with the bat

Rishabh Pant returned to Test cricket following a near-fatal car accident that happened in December 2022. In the first innings against Bangladesh, he scored 39 runs, but in the second innings, he excelled as the 26-year-old reached a remarkable century.

Pant scored 109 runs off 128 balls, including 13 fours and four sixes, marking his sixth Test hundred. He equaled former captain MS Dhoni’s record for the most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper. Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer took to X to praise the wicketkeeper-batter, writing:

“There’s simply no one else like him. Well played and welcome back @Rishabhpant17, Test cricket missed you!”

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill also delivered an outstanding performance, finishing unbeaten on 119 runs off 176 balls. The right-handed batter struck 10 boundaries and four sixes as India declared their second innings at 287/4, setting Bangladesh a daunting target of 515 runs.
