[Watch] Rohit Sharma falls for 18 as extra bounce from Matt Henry does the trick on Day 1 of IND vs NZ 2024 3rd Test

Team India skipper Rohit Sharma's stay was short on Day 1 of the third and final Test against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as he perished for a mediocre score. Right-arm seamer Matt Henry got the better of the Indian captain as he got one to climb and draw a nick to the slip cordon.

The dismissal occurred in the seventh over of the innings as Henry's short of a length delivery generated extra bounce, squaring up Rohit. The veteran opening batter looked to turn the ball over to the on side, but it caught the edge and flew to his opposite number Tom Latham, who took the catch in front of his face fairly comfortably. The right-hander had to walk back for 18 off as many deliveries after hitting three boundaries.

Take a look at his dismissal here:

The Nagpur-born cricketer hasn't had a good home Test season, with his only half-century coming against New Zealand in the second innings in Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, the hosts were going strong until the close of play as they had lost only Rohit. However, the final 10 minutes of Day 1 also witnessed Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj and Virat Kohli heading back to the dressing room. Jaiswal saw his stumps shattered by Ajaz Patel as the southpaw played the reverse sweep, while Siraj was trapped lbw off the very next ball.

Kohli, who got off the mark with a boundary off Rachin Ravindra, went for a risky single, but Matt Henry caught him short at the non-striker's end after nailing a direct hit. Replays confirmed that he was at least a yard short of the crease. At the close, India trailed by 149 runs, with Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill at the crease.

Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja's five-wicket haul restricted New Zealand to 235.
