Under Sharma's leadership, India ended their 11-year ICC trophy drought by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. The seasoned campaigner announced his T20I retirement following the showpiece event.
The 37-year-old was last seen in action during India's three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka last month. He was the top performer with the bat for the visitors, registering scores of 58, 64 and 35.
India failed to win a single match in the rubber. The first game ended in a tie, while Sri Lanka won the remaining two fixtures, claiming their first ODI series victory over India in 27 years.
"I feel he will not stay" - Aakash Chopra on Rohit Sharma's future with Mumbai Indians
Rohit Sharma's remarkable legacy with the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is likely to come to an end, according to former cricketer Aakash Chopra.
MI received a huge backlash from fans after Sharma was unceremoniously replaced as the skipper by all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Chopra suggested that the veteran player and Mumbai parting ways ahead of the upcoming mega auction wouldn't be a surprise to him.
Speaking in his latest YouTube video, the cricketer-turned-commentator said (from 8:45):
"Will he stay or will he go? It's a big question. Personally, I feel he will not stay. Whoever is retained will be with the thinking that he will remain with you for three years, unless your name is MS Dhoni. MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings' story is very different but Rohit Sharma at MI, I feel he might himself leave or MI might leave him."
It is worth mentioning that Rohit Sharma is one of the most successful captains in the league's history, having led MI to five titles, the joint-most along with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
