Indian captain Rohit Sharma seemed lost for words when he received a hero's welcome from the crowd that had packed the Wankhede to see the felicitation of the T20 World Cup champions. Rohit could only smile and shake his head in admiration as fans chanted his name as he was about to speak.
The Wankhede is known for its atmosphere, and fans certainly made their presence felt as Rohit began to speak about what the T20 World Cup win meant to the team. Here's the video:
Rohit thanked fans for the kind of reception the team has received since returning from Barbados. The Men in Blue visited the Prime Minister's residence in New Delhi on Thursday morning before reaching Mumbai in the evening for the open-top bus parade.
Rohit Sharma thanks fans for their unconditional support
Rohit Sharma acknowledged the fact that Indian fans have had to wait for 11 long years to see their team win an ICC trophy again.
He thanked fans for their continued support irrespective of the result and shed light on how he felt about the atmosphere in Mumbai and the celebrations on winning the T20 World Cup.
"Along with all the players who have represented the country, all the people who have been wanting us to win this trophy, this trophy belongs to them," Rohit said.
"Obviously Mumbai never disappoints when it comes to winning the trophy. I would like to thank all the fans. For the last 11 years, they have wanted this trophy to come here and we have finally brought it here and I am relieved."
Rohit Sharma also said that he wouldn't want to compare the 2007 T20 World Cup triumph with the one in 2024, as he reckons both are special in their own right. However, he's delighted to bring the trophy back to the Wankhede, as MS Dhoni and his men also had a similar bus parade to the stadium 12 years back after winning the ODI World Cup.
