[Watch] Sam Curran follows coin after toss amid controversy as broadcasters zoom in camera for 1st time in PBKS vs MI IPL 2024 match
Punjab Kings (PBKS) stand-in captain Sam Curran followed the coin after tossing it in the air ahead of their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 game against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Mullanpur on Thursday (April 18).
In a video shared by IPL's official handle on X (formerly Twitter), Curran was seen following the coin to confirm the result.
For the first time, the camera also zoomed in to show whether the coin landed towards head or tail on the 17th anniversary of IPL. This is done to bring more transparency, not just to the players but also to the fans at large.
Take a look:
The reaction came days after reports claimed that the coin flip between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) was fixed. The discussion came to light during the toss between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and RCB when Faf du Plessis was seen speaking with Pat Cummins about the same. Usually, match referees inform the players about the toss results.
PBKS opt to bowl against MI in IPL 2024 clash
PBKS captain Sam Curran won the toss and chose to bowl against MI on Thursday. They made a couple of changes as Rilee Rossouw and Ashutosh Sharma made way for Jonny Bairstow and Atharva Taide.
Curran said:
"We will have a bowl. Keeping up with the trend of the tournament. Shikhar is not well, so that's the only injury and Rilee comes in for Jonny today. It is not nice to lose the close games but we are doing a lot of things right. Taide drops out of the side, just a couple of tactical changes."
On the other hand, MI fielded an unchanged side despite losing to Chennai Super Kings by 20 runs in their last IPL game. The five-time champions have managed just two wins in six games so far.
On the other hand, PBKS have lost back-to-back matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals. They also have managed just two wins in six matches and would be keen to return to winning ways.
