[Watch] Sam Konstas gets the crowd behind to clap along with him in BGT 2024-25 4th Test
Young Australian opener Sam Konstas got the crowd to go behind him on day two of the fourth Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). With the 19-year-old clapping, the crowd at the iconic venue followed his lead to do the same as commentator Ravi Shastri expressed his excitement.
Konstas entertained the crowd to no end on Day 1 of the Test and played some audacious strokes on his way to a 65-ball 60, notably reverse-ramping Jasprit Bumrah on multiple occasions. The New South Welshman also got to his half-century off only 52 balls to stitch an 89-run stand opening stand with Usman Khawaja to put India on the back foot.
The teenage opener was also involved in a shoulder-barging incident with Virat Kohli during the morning session of play, causing the latter to cop a fine of 20% of his match fees at the end of the day's play.
"I was trying to put a bit of pressure on him" - Sam Konstas on facing Jasprit Bumrah
During the post-match presser, the right-hander said he was quite lucky to get a few deliveries away off Jasprit Bumrah. Branding the 31-year-old as a legend of the game, the 19-year-old said, as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo:
"I think I was just getting used to the wicket, first time facing him, getting used to his action. Obviously, he beat my bat quite a few times, and [I] was lucky enough to get a few away. But it was a great contest. He's a legend of the game, obviously, so I was trying to put a bit of pressure on him, and it paid off today. But obviously, he took three wickets and he changed the momentum. But I think I'm always challenging myself, trying to bring the best out of myself, so just getting that contest with him and trying to take his lines away."
Konstas' 60 proved to be vital in Australia's first-innings total of 474 in Melbourne.
