[Watch] Sarfaraz Khan falls into Mitchell Santner's trap as India collapses to 95/6 in 2nd 2024 Test vs New ZealandĀ
New Zealand left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner picked up his third wicket on Friday, October 25, by tempting Sarfaraz Khan for a chipped drive to mid-off to reduce India to 95/6 in the second Test in Pune.
It happened in the 34th over of the innings. Santner tossed the ball up outside the off-stump, at less than 80kph, and Sarfaraz took the bait by attempting to clear his front leg and hit it inside-out over covers. But the ball dropped on him a bit and he didn't reach its pitch completely, making the ball balloon off the inside half of his bat to mid-off.
Watch the video of the dismissal here:
Sarfaraz, who scored a 150 in the last match, was continuously tempted by slow, flighted, and dipping balls around his off-stump, like the one that got him out. He was dropped by Daryl Mitchell on his third ball and survived by showing decent forward defense later.
But his mode of dismissal seemed like he had run out of patience. It was the story of the rest of the line-up, too, with most of the specialist batters getting out to poor shots after making good starts instead of being removed by good deliveries from the Kiwi bowlers.
Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar India's last hopes after Sarfaraz's wicket
India lost Ravichandran Ashwin to Santner as well soon after Sarfaraz's wicket. The hosts went to Lunch seven wickets down with just 107 runs on board, and New Zealand's lead was still at 152.
Ravindra Jadeja at 11 off 24 and Washington Sundar, who took seven wickets in the first innings at his Test comeback, at 2 off 6, were the last hopes for a team. The batting collapse might put India on the brink of another Test defeat, and thus, a historic series loss at home.
