[Watch] Shakib Al Hasan departs for a golden duck following a soft dismissal in AFG vs BAN 2024 T20 World Cup Super 8 clash

Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan departed for a first-ball duck in the critical run chase against Afghanistan in the final Super 8 contest of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The left-handed batter could not make an impression in the do-or-die contest at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St.Vincent.

Bangladesh managed to restrict Afghanistan to 115 in the first innings, and according to calculations, they had to chase it down in 12.1 overs to qualify for the semi-finals. The Najmul Hossain Shanto-side are yet to win a match in the Super 8 stage, but Australia's loss against India on Monday, June 24, keeps them in the hunt.

Bangladesh made a positive start to the run chase as Litton Das took on Naveen-ul-Haq for a couple of boundaries in the first over. Afghanistan, however, fought back with Tanzid Hasan's dismissal by Fazalhaq Farooqi. Naveen also came back strongly in his second over, bringing Shakib Al Hasan to the crease.

The left-handed batter tried to guide the ball to the leg side against a delivery on his pads. However, his stroke only resulted in a leading edge, which the right-arm pacer pouched in his follow-through, on his second attempt.

This marks Shakib Al Hasan's fourth single-digit score in the ongoing campaign. Barring a half-century against the Netherlands at the same venue, he has not had much to show for with either bat or ball.

Shakib Al Hasan has been criticized of late for not spending time at the crease

The veteran all-rounder has copped a lot of blame from pundits, particularly from former India batter Virender Sehwag for his displays in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Shakib has been asked to reconsider his place in the national T20I side as he has not used his experience to any effect to help the team's cause.

"When you have a set batter with you at the crease, at least support him. At least stay out in the middle and spend some time, try to get something out of the match. Instead, only 11 runs were scored off seven deliveries and then he walked back. So, I did not understand that," Sehwag said on Cricbuzz following Shakib's poor show in the Super 8 clash against India

As of writing, rain has interrupted the proceedings yet again in St.Vincent. Bangladesh were placed at 31-3 after 3.2 overs in the run chase, with the pair of Litton Das and Soumya Sarkar out in the middle.
