[Watch] Shreyanka Patil gets the better of Chamari Athapaththu in the Women's T20 World Cup

Team India all-rounder Shreyanka Patil dismissed Sri Lanka's skipper and all-rounder Chamari Athapaththu in their league stage game at the 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup. Dubai International Cricket Stadium plays host to this contest on Wednesday, October 9.

Chamari Athapathuthu was kept away from the striker's end as after she took a single off the fourth ball of the first over, she came on strike an over later. She blocked the first ball she faced against Shreyanka Patil before she got a thick outside edge while prodding against the delivery. Deepti Sharma, standing at slips, took an excellent catch and helped Team India pick up another wicket.

In an all-important clash for both sides, India Women won the toss and elected to bat first. Harmanpreet Kaur (52 off 27) and Smriti Mandhana (50 off 38) put in good contributions. Their knocks, along with a well-paced knock from Shafali Verma (43 off 40), ensured that they finished with 172 runs on board.

Sri Lanka had a torrid start in the chase, losing an early wicket in the form of Vishmi Gunaratane. Wickets fell in heaps as first Chamari Athapaththu and then Harshitha Samawickrama would depart cheaply, leaving Sri Lanka on 6/3.

Kavisha Dilhari (21 off 22) and Anushka Sanjeevani (20 off 22) brought about some stability to the middle. They started the recovery act but were dismissed soon after. Sri Lanka find themselves in a spot of bother, with the score reading 61/7 after 13 overs at the time of writing. They need 112 runs to win to register their first win of the tournament.
