[Watch] Shreyas Gopal takes a smart catch off his own bowling in PBKS vs MI IPL 2024 match
Mumbai Indians (MI) frontline spinner Shreyas Gopal took an excellent catch off his own bowling to get rid of Harpreet Singh against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mullanpur. The catch ensured that the five-time champions made a vital incision as they defended 192.
The dismissal occurred in the seventh over of the innings as the wrist-spinner delivered a googly on length. Hapreet Singh Bhatia stayed back and chipped it to the bowler, who dived well to his left and took the catch. It was also his first wicket of the innings.
Earlier, PBKS captain Sam Curran won the toss and elected to field first. Suryakumar Yadav starred with a 53-ball 78, while Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma made 36 and 34 runs, respectively. Harshal Patel finished as the pick of the bowlers for the home side with three scalps, while Sam Curran took a couple, followed by Kagiso Rabada taking one.
MI prevail over Punjab Kings in final over thriller:
The five-time champions eventually prevailed by nine runs in Mullanpur as the efforts of Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma went in vain. Mumbai Indians' new-ball pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee reduced the home side to 14-4 after 2.1 overs, dismissing Sam Curran, Prabhsimran Singh, Liam Livingstone, and Rilee Rossouw cheaply.
The Punjab-based franchise were reduced to 111-7 when Ashutosh Sharma launched a brutal assault on the bowlers. Sharma reached his half-century off only 23 deliveries. His partnership of 57 with Harpreet Brar came to a close in the 18th over as Gerald Coetzee got the better of him.
With 12 required off the final over, Mohammad Nabi and Ishan Kishan combined to run out Kagiso Rabada to win a humdinger. It was Mumbai's third win of the season. Jasprit Bumrah bowled a terrific spell as he recorded sensational figures of 4-0-21-3.
