[Watch] Shreyas Iyer's father watches his son's double century live from ground during Mumbai vs Odisha Ranji Trophy 2024 clash

Shreyas Iyer notched up a magnificent double century for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2024 clash against Odisha on Thursday, November 7, and sent a reminder to selectors about his red-ball cricket credentials amidst the lean patch of the Indian Test middle-order.

The 29-year-old lost his place in the Test side earlier this year during a home series against England after a poor run of scores.

In a bid to make a comeback, Iyer has been representing Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. He played a marathon knock of 233 (228) in the first innings of the clash against Odisha and helped his side score 602 runs at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC in Mumbai.

Shreyas's father, Santosh, was in the stands as his son played a brilliant innings and brought up the double century. An X user shared a video to give a glimpse of the moment.

Shreyas Iyer and KKR part ways ahead of mega-auction after title-winning IPL 2024 season

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have released Shreyas Iyer ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction. Shreyas was the franchise's official captain after joining them in 2022. He also ended KKR's title drought earlier this year by leading them to victory in IPL 2024.

KKR's CEO Venky Mysore recently revealed that Shreyas Iyer was the first name on their retention list, but things did not work out as planned due to various factors. Mysore was quoted as saying by Rev Sports (via News 18):

"The interesting thing about retention is that there are so many aspects to it and forces as play. But what is fundamental to a retention that most people sometimes don’t understand that it’s a matter of mutually agreeing. It’s not a one-sided right that a franchise has. The player also has to consider various factors and agree. That influences a decision as well, eventually, but he was No.1 on our list."

He continued:

“He's captain and we have to build around that leadership and we picked him in 2022 specifically for that. He was an integral part, did a terrific job and I enjoyed a personal rapport with him. But at the end of the day, people also have to make their own decisions and decide on what’s best for them and the direction that want to go."
