[Watch] Shubman Gill takes a bow in trademark celebration of his 5th Test century during IND vs BAN 1st Test 2024
Team India opening batter Shubman Gill responded to questions about his place in the Test side with a magnificent century in the second innings of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai. The 25-year-old also brought out his customary bowing down celebration upon reaching the milestone in acknowledgment of the dressing room and crowd at the Chepauk Stadium.
Gill was dismissed for a duck in the first innings, courtesy of an unfortunate strangle down the leg side. However, he made amends in India's second essay by producing a free-stroking knock and reaching three figures off 161 deliveries.
Here is a video of Gill's bowing down celebration after he completed his century:
Despite criticism of his overall Test credentials with an average in the mid-30s, Gill came into the Bangladesh series in excellent form in the long format. The 25-year-old scored two centuries and as many half-centuries in the final six innings of the home series against England earlier this year.
Four of Gill's five Test centuries have come at home and his latest was the third this year.
Shubman Gill's heroics have India on the verge of a convincing victory
Shubman Gill's century ensured India took complete control of the first Bangladesh Test at the halfway mark on Day 3. After stuttering numerous times in the first innings, the hosts posted a competitive 376 on the board.
The bowlers then came to the party to bowl Bangladesh out for a dismal 149, helping India capture a mammoth 227-run first-innings lead.
India were again struggling at 67/3 in the second innings when Rishabh Pant joined a well-set Shubman Gill. The duo took the Bangladesh attack to the cleaners with a fourth-wicket partnership of 167.
While Pant was dismissed for 109, Gill remained unbeaten on 119 as India declared their second innings on 287/4. The visitors were set a daunting target of 515, with 2.5 days of action left.
As things stand, they have made a solid start at 19/0 in five overs, weathering the new-ball storm from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
