[Watch] Suryakumar Yadav smashes two stunning sixes during his blazing fifty in 1st IND vs SL T20I

Suryakumar Yadav started his T20I captaincy stint in style with an aggressive half-century against Sri Lanka on Saturday, July 27. Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele played host to the clash. Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and opted to bowl first in the contest.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (40) and Shubman Gill (34) gave India a brisk start in the powerplay with a 74-run opening partnership in six overs. Suryakumar Yadav took the onus on himself after their departures and took his side ahead with a blistering half-century. En route to 58 (26), Surya smashed eight fours and two stylish sixes. The newly-appointed captain hit both sixes in his favorite region behind the wicket.

India eventually scored 213/7 in 20 overs in the first innings.

"I think it's not a bad idea at all"- Ravi Shastri on Suryakumar Yadav's appointment as India's T20I captain

Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri recently backed the selectors' decision to appoint Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. Analyzing the reasons behind the decision in an episode of the ICC Review, Shastri said:

"We know he is street smart...he is one of the best T20 players in the world at the moment. He is a match-winner on his own, walks into the team day in, day out in that format of the game on his own steam, so I think it's not a bad idea at all."

Shastri added:

"I think it'll [captaincy style] be much like his personality, the way he plays the game. He'll be thinking very quickly and the fact that he knows all these players, even the senior players, I think he'll be in a great position to handle the team."
