It is worth mentioning that Gill failed to make it to India's main squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. He was named as one of the reserves for the showpiece event. With senior stars Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja announcing their retirement from T20Is following the ICC event, all eyes will be on Gill as the Men in Blue look to identify a new set of core players.
"When Rohit Sharma leaves tomorrow, Shubman Gill will be his right replacement for captaincy" - Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag recently opined that handing over the captaincy to Shubman Gill for the Zimbabwe tour was a step in the right direction. He suggested that the youngster is an ideal candidate to take over from Rohit Sharma following the latter's retirement.
He pointed out that Gill can be a pivotal cog in India's lineup across formats. Speaking to Cricbuzz, here's what the cricketer-turned-commentator said:
"Shubman Gill is for the long haul. He's a player who plays all three formats. He's had a great last year. He was unlucky to miss out on the 2024 T20 World Cup. According to me, it is the right decision to make him the captain. When Rohit Sharma leaves tomorrow, Shubman Gill will be his right replacement for captaincy."
The first T20I of the five-match series between India and Zimbabwe will be played at Harare Sports Club in Harare on Saturday, July 6. All the five matches of the rubber will take place at the same venue.
