[Watch] Team India vice-captain Shubman Gill poses with a young fan at airport ahead of Sri Lanka series

Team India vice-captain Shubman Gill recently posed for a picture with a young fan at an airport. All the players of the T20I squad reached Sri Lanka on Monday (July 22) to commence preparations for the upcoming three-match series in Pallekele.

Shubman Gill was last seen on the field during the Zimbabwe tour earlier this month, leading an inexperienced Indian team in the five-match T20I series. He led the team well as they won the series comfortably by a 4-1 margin. Gill top-scored in the series with a tally of 170 runs across five games at an average of 42.5, including two half-centuries.

After a fruitful tour as captain, the selectors kept their faith in Shubman Gill by appointing him as vice-captain in the ODI and T20I formats, with an eye on the future and getting ready for life post-Rohit Sharma's reign.

India's tour of Sri Lanka will begin on July 27 with the first T20I in Pallekele. After playing two more T20Is at the same venue on July 28 and 30, the two teams will then square off in the three-match ODI series.

A lucky fan recently got an opportunity to meet Shubman Gill as he was traveling through the airport for the upcoming series. Gill posed for a picture, sporting a smile.

"Being in the leadership group will bring the best out of him"- Vikram Rathour on Shubman Gill after his appointment as India vice-captain in ODI and T20I formats

Former Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour recently opined that Shubman Gill could excel in a leadership role, and it might bring out his best version as it did with veteran players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Speaking to Indian Express, Vikram Rathour said:

"I feel captaincy brought the best out of Virat and Rohit and I feel it will do the same for Shubman. Although, he is not yet the captain, being in the leadership group will bring the best out of him as well. This is I am very sure off. When you are in that role, leading others, it gives you that extra bit of responsibility, which is good and I think is great for a young kid like Shubman, who one day might lead India in all three formats."

Vikram continued:

"When I first saw him in the nets, my first impression was like everybody else’s. I saw exactly what a lot of people were talking about and spoke about his special talent. The immediate thought that went into my mind was ‘whoa this kid is extremely talented’. He knew his game, he understood how he needs to bat in different situations and never shied away from challenges."
